Grain Belt Express Files to Bring Economic Benefits to Kansas Sooner
March 2023Topeka, Kansas (March 13, 2023) – Grain Belt Express, an Invenergy Transmission project, filed last week with Kansas regulators to amend its project approvals to allow Kansas to realize the economic benefits of the line more quickly.
In a filing with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC), Grain Belt Express is requesting the ability to finance and construct the project in two phases, the first being from Kansas to the Missouri interconnection point.
The filing follows an announcement last summer that due to strong regional demand for affordable and reliable power, the project is proposing to increase capacity on the line by 25 percent to 5,000 megawatts, with an increased total project investment of approximately $7 billion.
“By constructing the line in two phases, we can ensure that Kansans enjoy the economic benefits of building the line sooner, while increasing the affordable power delivered to businesses and families,” said Shashank Sane, executive vice president and head of transmission at Invenergy. “Grain Belt Express will create thousands of jobs in Kansas during construction, while boosting our homegrown energy supply to meet demand and enhance reliability. Our proposal to the KCC requests to bring this economic growth to Kansas more quickly.”
In another key milestone for the project, the Illinois Commerce Commission voted last week to grant a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for Grain Belt Express approving the project route in Illinois.
